This one I've been dreading putting up for a bit just because I'm not sure how to explain one of the central concepts behind the chapter.
Okay, so... Guess will just plunge in. One big aim of this chapter is that I wanted to try sort of a long-running homage to something and to take a ton of elements from one story and completely rework them into something else entirely. To that end I chose Misfile.
My feelings on Misfile are kind of complicated. I've been reading it for many years and stuck with it even in having dropped plenty of other webcomics in the meantime, but I do often take issue with things it does and I do think it's kind of gone on too long at this point and needs to wrap up. But I still have had a lot of fun with things in it over the years and I do greatly enjoy facets of it, mostly as it relates to the two leads Ash and Emily.
So, this whole chapter has a running thing of putting in random Misfile references - there's one big running one that will become soon apparent, but there'll be stray lines, visual cues, background gags, and whatever else scattered throughout, though I do fully intend for the chapter to function on its own as well and it's not at all based on Misfile in terms of plot. The order thing is a reference to that, seeing as the entire plot of Misfile wouldn't have happened if one of the characters had better organization skills.
That being said, about the chapter itself. This is going to be a busy one - there are three main plots fighting for screentime, and they'll intersect in various ways and lead into each other on and off throughout. One of them involves this mysterious guy in the darkness here - mentioned in the WaR filler the other week as being named Brick Leston - and the car behind him.
Another involves that NBA / sexism thing. Yeah, that's not a random detail to add a little visual interest to the cover, that is entirely relevant.
I wanna say the NBA blurb was all me, but not sure. Martin usually gives me bullet-points about what to do for the little bits on these covers; Naturally the biggest one here talked about our mystery centerfold here, but also told me to work in ways for the magazine to discuss revenge, order, and going fast.
.... Huh. Am realizing now I didn't include a Blues reference. Usually try to work those in somehow or other, sometimes overt sometimes more subtle, but totally forgot here. That's weird. Not sure how I'd tie the comic into any of those bullet-points Martin tossed me, though. I did enjoy the "lemon" pun at least.
But yeah, lighting was easily my favorite part of this one. Really went a lot way toward making this guy look mysterious and alluring. Hope that carries.
As for Misfile, while I know a good deal on it thanks to being friends with Martin I don't actually read it. ^^ I hear a lot of great stuff, of course, I just don't read that many webcomics. Oh, the irony.
All the same, I wanted to keep close to Martin's idea of making this whole chapter a tribute, so been paying close attention to when he says we need a reference where and to what, and hoping things will be accessible to fans of it. Martin's naturally been linking me to pages needed for everything where appropriate, so will keep an eye out.
One drawback to the Misfile thing is that one element important to the comic will turn up increasingly in this one. And that one element is something I really suck at drawing. Ah, well, knew this was coming, time to grow a pair and step up to the plate.
Don't be so hard on yourself Adam cars are tricky and you've done a very decent job of drawing them so far.
Awww... Thanks. ^^
