This page is sort of the standing example to me of a thing we're trying to do in having images take up more space on the page. Martin pointed out that there's too much empty space on a lot of pages and when working on this I realized it. In particular when I was first doing it that middle panel of Cynthia looking at the picture of her and Flowers? The panel as always that size but both Cynthia and the picture were like half the size they are now. It just made no sense so blew them up. Watch for that now; always trying to spot the next improvement.
The picture's a clear homage to another hiking trip picture we saw Cynthia taking on one of the covers. I dunno, more thought than you'd think goes into personal interests for these characters. Hiking displays athleticism while also having a pensive, intellectual bent, being a heavy metal fan shows she's got a wild side under the surface. The right choice in interest can add a lot of detail to the character.
For the record, heavy metal was Martin's addition, but I kinda just threw the hiking bit in. Mostly for the personality-related reasons, though I do like doing it, particularly up mountains and hilly terrain. Which sucks because Louisiana's flatter than a pancake which means I can only hike up mountain trails if I'm out of town and for the most part I don't like to travel.
That last panel's probably a little less ominous if you saw this when it first went up. Sorry about that, folks.
Anyway, yeah, back to Cynthia! Yeah, really wanted to kind of straddle a line between charming down-home stuff and serious depression throughout this leg of the plot, with this page really being the culmination of it. Supposed to feel really foreboding.
Not sure how much I've really got to say on this page overall, think Adam pretty well summed it up. Do like the accidental mirror to this week's WaR page here - Alex started out moving with purpose and with energy to him and descended into being unable to stand and slumped up against something barely conscious, this page does the opposite. Nice little parallel I think.
Intriguing, this is getting very interesting.
