I set this up in advance with placeholder comments, now don't even remember which page this is.
.... Oh, right, yeah, Hazel vs. Mercy fight. Really enjoyed this page.
One thing I've noticed in drawing sorta wimp-ish characters is that they often don't look right in the torso. There's a sort of barrel-chest thing going when I draw scrawny guys. Very apparently with Rin. I was actively trying to fix that here and really love how Hazel came out as a result. I get the feeling when he saw Mercy take off his shirt and coat he just thought ".... Fuck."
I love how Mercy comes off in his fight too. He feels to me a lot like a kid who's just gotten an excuse to beat up his little brother in a way that won't get him in trouble. His thoughts for this fight are likely "Oh, God, I can't believe this dumbass agreed to this." I also think he's letting Hazel give him that first tap on the ribs, as a subtle way of demonstrating to him "Yeah, you can't hurt me."
I love those baggy pants on Hazel, too. Again, does a lot to make him look like a wimp.
Yeah, I'm sure between the size disparity and the fact it'd be two different fight scenes running simultaneously otherwise nobody expected this to last long.
But yeah, pretty happy with this one, and with the Hazel and Mercy stuff in general so far. Do rather enjoy writing their relationship and I'm quite eager for all the things I have planned for this leg of the plot.
And hey, blood that actually looks kind of decent! That's something I always struggle with when the need arises, given blood just has this weird color to try and emulate - if it's too dark it looks dry but if it's too light it looks like Kool-Aid.
Not done with these two just yet of course, they have more to do in the chapter than just this and next page is also focused on them, so probably have more to say then.
